Scouts On Olympic Target

Clayton West Scout Group has just become one of an elite band. The Group is now one of the few in the whole of the UK that can offer its members an access point to no less than three Olympic sports: Archery, Kayaking and Target Shooting.

Adults at the Group have committed to help young people access authorised training in a range of activities not normally offered elsewhere.

Archery was the first of the sports to be provided and Clayton West Scout Group now not only has the equipment resource, but a growing pool of Instructors at the Great National Archery Society (GNAS) entry level standard. The Group now facilitates the training of other instructors, some previously Scouts at Clayton West, at courses held at its premises and run by GNAS Coach Mick Fitzpatrick. Mick adds, “It was some time ago that the Scouts came to us for their initial training, now I’m on my fourth course here and it is really good to see that the Scouts trained at Clayton West shoot to the standard expected by the GNAS. That is a mark of proper tuition by their Leaders.”

The archery was followed by the development of a kayak facility. Initially led by husband and wife team Ewan and Fiona Scott, the kayaking has become a core activity for Scouts and explorers, with the Group offering British Canoe Union One, Two and Three Star Courses, with opportunities to develop beyond 3 Star – some of the first paddlers to undertake these courses are now qualified coaches themselves. Fiona Scott, Scout Leader added, “Over the years we have run many, many courses and we have a good record of developing paddling skills in young people. We are undertaking further training ourselves so that we can meet the latest standards and also help the paddlers access the more exciting moving water.”

The third element added to the resources at Clayton West is the Olympic sport of Target Shooting. Earlier in 2007 five adults from Clayton West attended a National Small Bore Rifle Association (NSRA) course and became qualified to teach the NSRA  Youth Proficiency Award.

Group Scout Leader, Ewan Scott said, “In the current climate of fear of gun crime we thought long and hard about whether to undertake this development. The sport is tightly controlled and in essence it is no different from archery - a spring is used to send a projectile at a target. Those targets are fixed and always take the form of a roundel: Neither the Scout Association, the GNAS, nor the NSRA condone shooting at representations of people or animals. If we teach respect and the proper use, in the proper place; and we emphasise safety and control then target shooting is no more risky than a challenge to get a higher score than the next competitor. I hasten to add that the equipment is not kept on the premises for obvious reasons.”

Clayton West Scout Group is willing to take on and train other adults in activity skills in return for a commitment to assist at the Group and a token contribution to activity training costs. For further details contact Ewan Scott at ewanscott@btinternet.com

West Fest

GLASTONBURY'S off this year and tickets for V Festival and the Carling Weekends in Leeds and Reading are sold out.

But don't panic, you can still get to a festival this summer - because West Fest is back.

The event will bring the best of West Yorkshire bands together at Clayton West Scout Grounds on Wakefield Road on September 8 and 9.

The event made its debut last year.

Organiser Ewan Scott said this year's West Fest was set to be bigger and better than ever before.

He said: "The event has been oversubscribed by bands and we have been receiving unsolicited applications despite our website having been down for months!

"West Fest 2005 was so successful and peaceful that there are no objections and a residents' survey got us a positive response."

On Friday night there will be easy listening music from big bands and jazz acts for the more mature festival goers.

The main entertainment takes place on the Saturday, with 13 bands delighting audiences with everything from hip hop to heavy rock.

COPY SNIPPED

He said: "This is our second year and already there are people talking about West Fest 3, which is a bit previous of them.

"But I too would like to see the event mushroom into a week long music festival for the area - a real 'people's music' event with something throughout the week for everyone."

Footnote: This event was cancelled because funding applications made by the local youth services were wrongly completed and funding refused as a result.
