A fun and stimulating environment for young people

Sending them to a local boy scout group is an excellent way to add happiness and excitement to your son's life. He will enjoy doing many fun and interesting activities and will learn how to work in a team and make friends with other boys.

Swimming, music, exploring, computing and collecting!

We have all of these great activities and more. You will get the chance to try as many things as you like before deciding what to pursue and get your badges in. The activities we teach are not only fun as pass-times, but can provide you with skills that might be useful or even life-saving later on in the real world.

Welcome to Clayton West Scout Group’s Home on the Internet

Clayton West Scout Group caters for the young people of the Upper Dearne Valley, from Clayton West, Scissett, Kitchenroyd, Denby Dale, Upper Denby, and Upper and Lower Cumberworth. When we have space we can sometimes accommodate members from Skelmanthorpe or Emley, but the Upper Dearne Valley villages take priority.

Please note: When your child joins us, he joins the Group, he/she joins Scouting, not just a Monday night club. We offer activities that may be on different evenings, joint events, and activities and events away from the Scout Hut - these can be as simple as pond dipping, or as exotic as International trips. Members only really benefit if they are able to take part in as many events as is possible. Participation is not mandatory, but it is important.

The Group consists of Beavers 5.5 years to 8 years, Cubs 8 years to 10.5 years, Scouts, 10 years to 14.5 years. There is also an attached Explorer Unit for 14-18 year olds.

The Clayton West Scout Group Ethos

The ethos of the Group is to operate as a family. We encourage joint events between sections, and try to have two or three whole Group events throughout the year, including a Gala in the summer and one of the longest standing bonfire parties in the valley in November.

Adults have as much fun here as the youngsters, and Leaders and helpers are encouraged to take part in activities as Leaders and Instructors, we do not expect people to stand on the sidelines. Additionally, we have social events for adults from time to time, and have been known to run trips to the Christmas markets in Germany for our adult members.

If you are interested in joining as a youth member or an adult, please use the joining form accessed from the menu on the left.

International Activity

Clayton West Scouts have a tradition of getting young people going abroad. Our first trip was to Alsace, we have since taken Scouts and Explorers to Flanders and the Ardennes, plus we have run adult trips to the Christmas markets of Dusseldorf and Cologne. Additionally, we heve sent members to Ghana, Mexico and Peru with Go Ghana, and West Yorkshire County Scouts.

We also raised a considerable sum of money for a Children of Chernobyl project, and worked with them whilst they were at Bradley Wood campsite.

You can read about these trips by clicking on the menu to the left.

We gratefully acknowledge the generous support of our donor, London based Discovery Learning, who fund our international trips.
